Reflections on Our First Year

One year… one mission: to impact secular Washington with the message of Jesus Christ. As we celebrate our anniversary, here’s a look back at the LORD’s hand on us and work through us in Montgomery County over the past year.

MBC Bethesda held its first services on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011 at the beautiful Music Center in North Bethesda. Hundreds of men, women, youth and children poured into the auditorium and classrooms to worship the LORD and join His movement in Montgomery County.

Our adults grew together in community with one another and intimacy with the LORD through fellowship (e.g. campus lunches at Bertucci’s, campus BBQ, dinner groups and nights of prayer and worship), service and outreach (e.g. Metro blitzes, DC Schools Project, Turkey Outreach and Angel Tree) and growth-oriented classes and groups (e.g. small group Bible studies, Christianity 101, Singles’ Fellowship, Men’s Fellowship and Sunday Morning Bible Study).

Our youth came together and built a vibrant, challenging and fun community in The Rock. Through Sunday services, house group Bible studies, summer and winter camps, mission trips, service projects, concerts, outreach events and an evangelism conference, our teens came to know the LORD and one another as they reached out to their friends with the life-saving message of Jesus Christ.

Our children had a blast in Kid’s Quest learning that Jesus loves them, they are special and God has a plan for their lives. During Sunday services, children came to know Jesus through skits, crafts, Bible stories and games. Throughout the week, our kids got to know each other and the LORD while reaching out to their friends through Bible clubs, family nights and service projects. We even had Kid’s Sunday, when our children helped greet, usher, lead worship and give the announcements.

To accommodate the show schedule at the Music Center, MBC Bethesda met at three alternate locations on various Sundays throughout the year: the Silver Spring Civic Center, the Round House Theatre and the Hyatt Regency. Then, in November, MBC Bethesda made the move to meeting regularly at the Round House Theatre in downtown Bethesda. Our new home has been such a blessing, and we love filling it with songs of praise to our God!

It has been a fun and exciting year filled with lots of change, for sure. And yet the constant love, assuring peace and perfect plan of the LORD have guided us, blessed us, gone before us and sustained us on this journey. It has been our joy to follow where He has led and to build a faithful presence in Montgomery County for His glory. I need no further confirmation that the “church” is not a building but rather the body of Christ – the community of those called out of their old lives and into the newness of life under the blood of Christ – than the LORD has provided me this past year at MBC Bethesda. His ways are good and His plan is perfect, and I cannot help but be overwhelmed and motivated to action by the blessings He has poured out on our campus.  I eagerly anticipate what God has prepared for us in the coming year.

But as it is written: ‘Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love him.’ (1 Cor. 2:9, NKJV)
